Secondary treatment

Secondary treatment is also referred to as biological treatment. This step replicates the self-cleaning processes that occur in natural water bodies. A high concentration of bacteria known as “activated sludge”, is created in the basin, combined with, in the case of aerobic treatment, sufficient oxygen, speeds up this natural process.

The following processes are considered as secondary treatment systems:

  1. Aerobic biological treatment

  2. Anaerobic treatment

    • Hydrolysis process
    • Biogas generation
